Medicare for Dummies

September 11, 2009

The thing about the bully pulpit is that Presidents can make the most fantastic claims and it takes days to sort the reality from the myths. So as a public service, let's try to navigate the, er, remarkable Medicare discussion that President Obama delivered on Wednesday. It isn't easy.

Mr. Obama began by depicting a crisis in the entitlement state, noting that "our health-care system is placing an unsustainable burden on taxpayers," especially Medicare. Unless we find a way to cauterize this fiscal hemorrhage, "we will eventually be spending more on Medicare than every other government program combined. Put simply, our health-care program is our deficit problem. Nothing else even comes close."

On this score he's right. Medicare's unfunded liability—the gap between revenues and promised benefits—is currently some $37 trillion over the next 75 years. Yet the President uses this insolvency as an argument to justify the creation of another health-care entitlement, this time for most everyone under age 65. It's like a variation on the old Marx Brothers routine: "The soup is terrible and the portions are too small."

Medicare
Associated Press

President Barack Obama addresses a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009.

As astonishing, Mr. Obama claimed he can finance universal health care without adding "one dime to the deficit, now or in the future, period," in large part by pumping money out of Medicare. The $880 billion Senate plan he all but blessed this week would cut Medicare by as much as $500 billion, mainly by cutting what Mr. Obama called "waste and abuse." Perhaps this is related to the "waste and abuse" that Congresses of both parties have targeted dozens of times without ever cutting it.

Apparently this time Mr. Obama means it, though he said this doesn't mean seniors should listen to "demagoguery and distortion" about Medicare cuts. That's because Medicare is a "sacred trust," and the President swore to "ensure that you—America's seniors—get the benefits you've been promised."

So no cuts, for anyone—except, that is, for the 24% of senior beneficiaries who are enrolled in the Medicare Advantage program, which Democrats want to slash by $177 billion or more because it is run by private companies. Mr. Obama called that money "unwarranted subsidies in Medicare that go to insurance companies—subsidies that do everything to pad their profits but don't improve the care of seniors."

In fact, Advantage does provide better care, which is one reason that enrollment has doubled since 2003. It's true that the program could be better designed, with more competitive bidding and quality bonuses. But Advantage's private insurers today provide the kind of care that Mr. Obama said he would mandate that private insurers provide for the nonelderly—"to cover, with no extra charge, routine checkups and preventative care."

Advantage plans have excelled at filling in the gaps of the a la carte medicine of traditional Medicare, contracting with doctors and hospitals to coordinate care and improve quality and covering items such as vision, hearing and management of chronic illness. If seniors in Advantage lose this coverage because of the 14% or 15% budget cut that Mr. Obama favors, well, that's "waste and abuse."

Mr. Obama did also promise to create "an independent commission of doctors and medical experts charged with identifying more waste in the years ahead." That kind of board is precisely what has many of the elderly worried about government rationing of treatment: As ever-more health costs are financed by taxpayers, something will eventually have to give on care the way it has in every other state-run system.

But Mr. Obama told seniors not to pay attention to "those scary stories about how your benefits will be cut, especially since some of the folks who are spreading these tall tales have fought against Medicare in the past and just this year supported a budget that would essentially have turned Medicare into a privatized voucher program."

This is a partisan swipe at one of the best GOP ideas to rationalize the federal budget, despite Mr. Obama's accusations that his opponents want to do "nothing." This reform would get Medicare out of the business of spending one out of five U.S. health dollars, and instead give the money directly to seniors to buy insurance to encourage them to be more conscious of cost and value within a limited budget. Democrats would rather have seniors dance to decisions made by his unelected "commission of doctors and medical experts."

Mr. Obama also called for "civility" in debate even as he calls the arguments of his critics "lies." So in the spirit of civility, we won't accuse the President of lying about Medicare. We'll just say his claims bear little relation to anything true.

As the CEO of this Organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way.  To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%, but since we can't increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off 8 of our employees instead.  This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go.  So, this is what I did.  I walked through our parking lot and found 8 'Obama' bumper stickers on our employee's vehicles and I have decided these folks will be let go. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this issue.  They voted for change and they will receive change.  Don't worry though Obama has increased Unemployment benefits for you!  To the rest of my family see you at the annual company picnic.

Points from this article were taken from the Heritage Foundation. Barack claims his budget will cut the deficit in half by the end of his term.

I assume he means 4 years because he can't assume that he will be President for 8 years.

Brian Riedl, Heritage Analyst, points out that "Obama has already helped Quadruple the deficit with his stimulus package, pleding to halve it by 2013 is hardly ambitious." What’s driving Obama’s unprecedented massive deficits? Spending. Riedl details:

  • President Bush expanded the federal budget by a historic $700 billion through 2008. President Obama would add another $1 trillion.
  • President Bush began a string of expensive financial bailouts. President Obama is accelerating that course.
  • President Bush created a Medicare drug entitlement that will cost an estimated $800 billion in its first decade. President Obama has proposed a $634 billion down payment on a new government health care fund.
  • President Bush increased federal education spending 58 percent faster than inflation. President Obama would double it.
  • President Bush became the first President to spend 3 percent of GDP on federal antipoverty programs. President Obama has already increased this spending by 20 percent.
  • President Bush tilted the income tax burden more toward upper-income taxpayers. President Obama would continue that trend.
  • President Bush presided over a $2.5 trillion increase in the public debt through 2008. Setting aside 2009 (for which Presidents Bush and Obama share responsibility for an additional $2.6 trillion in public debt), President Obama’s budget would add $4.9 trillion in public debt from the beginning of 2010 through 2016.

The Obama Standards...

March 20, 2009

Let me start with this!

Special Olympics quip on Jay Leno...If this was from Bush there would've been alot more written and talked about this!  I personally don't mind these kinds of jokes...Why not?  Because it's a JOKE!  people need to ease up a bit...but give me a break if you are gonna give Obama such a break for his words...Sorry Obama but without the Teleprompter present you just don't know what to say do you?  For all the hard times people gave Bush for what he said...Obama doesn't even get half of that for his stupid comments...why can't he speak without the Teleprompter?

Obama Standards are okay too when he wants more troops in Afghanistan!  How come the Peacekeeping hippies aren't out protesting this move?!?!  Where is Cindy Sheehan!?!?  I guess it's okay for Obama to increase troops there isn't it....

I don't want to go thru the handful of promises he made during his campaign that he already broke as well...All part of the Obama Standard it's okay for him to lie!  We already know that! He already does it....

Since I am in California I am also going to mention this!  His townhall appearance in Costa Mesa he made the following statement part of the TEXT of what he said:

Here's what the budget does not do.  It does not raise the taxes of any family making less than $250,000 a year by a single dime.  (Applause.)  In fact, 95 percent of all working families will receive a tax cut as a result of our recovery plan.

Now, there are those who say these plans are too ambitious; we should be trying to do less, not more.  Obama is trying to do too much, they say; just focus on Wall Street, focus on the banks.

AUDIENCE:  Nooo --

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, I say our challenges are too large to ignore.  The cost of health care is too high to ignore.  The dependence on oil is too dangerous to ignore.  Our education deficit is too wide to ignore.  (Applause.)

To kick these problems down the road for another four years or eight years, that would be to continue the same irresponsibility that got us to this point.  I didn't run for President to pass on our problems to the next generation, or the next President.  I ran for President to solve these problems so that you've got a better shot in life.  (Applause.)

MR. OBAMA! YOU ARE OUTTA YOUR LEAGUE!  OBVIOUSLY BY NOT "IGNORING" THINGS YOU ARE IGNORING IMPORTANT THINGS!

TODAY'S HEADLINES: AUDITORS PROJECT DEEPER DEFICITS FOR OBAMAS BUDGET

President Barack Obama's budget would produce $9.3 trillion in deficits over the next decade, more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush's presidency, congressional auditors said Friday.

The new Congressional Budget Office figures offered a far more dire outlook for Obama's budget than the new administration predicted just last month — a deficit $2.3 trillion worse. It's a prospect even the president's own budget director called unsustainable.

Why did this happen?  Because Obama is out of his league!  He can't manage ever issue and task at once like he says he can!  Come on Mr. President!  WAKE UP!  Stop trying to be a STAR on TV...stop appearing on Late Night TV and trying to think you are funny!  This is a serious Presidency!  Not for you to go tout yourself as an Actor!  Oh wait you did "ACT" well conning good working Americans into voting for you!

Taken from an old colleague of mine who now resides in Florida!  Hope everything is well CG!

Does it ever end? Billions to bail out the financial sector. Billions to bail out the automotive industry. Hundreds of billions for a stimulis package that not even the Democrats are certain will do anything. And now 410B for additional spending.

For a president that promised "change" and "responsible government", Obama is not off to a great start. Granted, I am not a fan of the president's. I have believed from the outset that his approach to government was an academic experiment in socialism and I would rather have had another hand at the wheel. Given that, I do believe that he believes that he is delivering change and a new level of government responsibility. Its what he truly wants to give us.

Unfortunately for us we have to live with the results of our President's inexperience and idealism. The results: legislation, bail outs, and spending bills in the untold billions churned out by a Democrat controlled congress because the leader of their party is not providing any leadership. President Obama naively believes that his party fellows Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, et. al. will work towards his "fair and balanced" and "responsible" approach on their own. They certainly have proved him wrong.

We will see more of Obama's true colors when this bill hits his desk. If he veto's it and sends it back to Nancy Pelosi and the House he just may be the man he has tried so hard to persuade us that he is.

I am not counting on that. Like most idealists he is also easily blinded. He has banked on his high public approval ratings to see him through his tremendous spending, his ludicrous appointees, his attempts to nationalize our banks and socialize our health care. He will most likely continue to believe that the people's approval rating of him will automatically be tranferred to what he does, including signing this spending bill into law. The polls do not bear this out. The public opinion of the stimulus package, the bailouts, and spending run much lower than the public's opinon of him.

Where does that leave us? Besides under some pretty heavy duty debt, it leaves us with a President who runs the risk of becoming increasingly disconnected from reality. A President that believes so much in himself and his mission that his actions, and worse yet, actions taken in his name, reflect his own agenda rather than the welfare of the nation in his stewardship.

Will any of this change? If our history of recent Democratic presidents tells us anything the answer to that is no. Obama is on the same trajectory that lead Carter and Clinton to lose control of their government's. Carter had a government so huge that it regulated the retail price of gasoline and airline tickets. Clinton had a government so out of control that Freddie and Fannie prompted the creation of sub-prime mortgages.

In only the first few months of his presidency, the Obama government has spent upwards of $1.5T. I wonder what his claim to fame will be?

Obama always seems to be trying to take advantage of these type of Public Situations.

Travelling to the most dire areas to do a Town Hall or Speak about the economy.

Don't forget lying about what the CEO of Catepillar said about the Stimulus Package helping to save jobs!

Don't forget letting people in Florida BEG to him for a Home, Car, Job, Unemployment Benefits!

Yes, I'm proud that 25 recruits in Ohio will have a job!  Woo Hooo!

25 New Jobs CREATED by his Economic Stimulus Package!  Congratulations!

I'm happy for him!  Wooo Hoooo!  Thanks for the Job Creation!!!!

This is just a prediction of mine!

What did Obama say?

"Every voice has to be heard. Every idea must be considered ... The status quo is the one option that is not on the table," Obama said during the White House forum on what he calls the greatest threat to the U.S. economy — rising health care costs.

Let's see if he locks anybody out of creting the bill on Health Care Reform!!!!!  My guess is he already has his mind set on how he wants to do this!

Since when in a Presidential Administration have we seen this before?

What am I talking about?

I'm talking about them going all out to respond directly to Commentary about the way they are handling things!

Obama and his Administration are too sensitive!!!!

This is utterly ridiculous!

Robert Gibbs, White House Press Secretary has directly responded to:  Rick Santelli, Jim Cramer and Rush Limbaugh.

Why is Mr. Gibbs responding directly to these guys? Since when did a current Presidential Administration have to respond directly to various news media? Especially directly at individuals? In fact, I didn't know this is the Job of a Press Secretary was to directly respond to individual items from the Media.

  • Are they scared of someone learning the truth?
  • Are they scared that people don't support what Obama's Grnad Plans are?
  • Are they scared that they are revealing Obama's Pre-Election Lies?
  • Are they scared that Americans will realize we are moving closer to a Socialist Nation?
  • Are they scared that Hard Working Americans are losing out and will realize it?
  • What are they scared of?

In fact, doesn't Robert Gibbs claims that most of these guys only represent a "small audience". Why is he responding to each of these guys directly if their "small audience" obviously insignificant if they are so small...You would think Mr. Gibbs has better things to do...

Mr. Gibbs now it's my turn to challenge you! Instead of defending the President and attacking others please get with the program and know that WE WANT AMERICA BACK!

I'm tired of people saying it's the Conservatives and Republicans that are against Obama's plans!

Just to show you all that isn't Republicans that are opposing Obama!

Key Democrats are questioning his plans as well for cutting Tax Deductions for High Wage Earners.

Senator Robert Menendez, D-NJ - "I won't want to prejudge anything, but it is certainly one that I am having difficulties with" in response to Obama limiting deductions for High Wage Earners.

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus, D-MT, questions if the proposal is viable.

Charles Rangel, chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, said he had reservations about the proposal as well.

PRESIDENT OBAMA WAKE UP PLEASE!!!!!

JIM CRAMER a LIFE LONG DEMOCRAT has expressed his concerns over what Obama is doing!

Today Jim Cramer said that Obama has a "Radical Agenda" and it is the "greatest wealth destruction I've seen by a President."

"Cramer acknowledged that for a new president, changing the world might seem irresistible, but he said simply that Obama needs to put his whole agenda on hold, for now, until things can stabilize. He said it's not just the banks that are getting pushed down by Obama's policies, now the oil stocks, along with health care, are also in free fall."

I thought this article from the Wall Street Journal Opinion section was important enough to take quotes from and explain to people that Obama's Plan doesn't make sense!

 http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123561551065378405.html?mod=article-outset-box

It's called "The 2% Illusion"

A major part of his proposal is that he will end tax breaks for just 2% of the wealthiest Americans and houshoulds earning less than $250K will not see their taxes increase by a single dime.

With definitive numbers from IRS data in 2006 it goes on to show that even taxing the wealthiest at 100% of their Taxable Income of everyone earning over $500K in the United States wouldn't yield enough to make a dent in the $4 Trillion to be spent in Fiscal 2010.

The end result is obvious everyone in the United States will have to pay higher taxes!!!!!  Maybe not this year since he made a promise not to raise taxes...but the higher taxes are going to come!

If we aren't paying higher income taxes we will see hidden taxes in other things in the future to make up for these differences:  Energy, Food, etc...

"Mr. Obama is very good at portraying his agenda as nothing more than center-left pragmatism. But pragmatists don't ignore the data. And the reality is that the only way to pay for Mr. Obama's ambitions is to reach ever deeper into the pockets of the American middle class."

I think Obama believes those who voted for him are dumb!  They really don't understand what he is doing to this country and what he his agenda is they just listen to him and are stuck in his HYPE and CHEERING for him!

TIME AND TIME AGAIN WE'VE LEARNED THAT THIS MAN IS A MAN OF WORDS ONLY AND MANY GROSSLY EXAGGERATED STATEMENTS!

1.  Obama claims "Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs.  More than 90% of these jobs will be in the private sector – jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges; constructing wind turbines and solar panels; laying broadband and expanding mass transit."

I've been talking about this stupid job creation for a while now!  One time it was 3 Million jobs, the next time he inflated it to 4 Million jobs and now this time it is 3.5 Million jobs!  He has no real clue what the results are going to be!  Yet, he doesn't have any data or statistics to show this will be true!  These are all guesses and rhetoric I'm tired of from Obama.

2.  Obama has "launched a housing plan that will help responsible families facing the threat of foreclosure lower their monthly payments and re-finance their mortgages.  It’s a plan that won’t help speculators or that neighbor down the street who bought a house he could never hope to afford, but it will help millions of Americans who are struggling with declining home values – Americans who will now be able to take advantage of the lower interest rates that this plan has already helped bring about."

What is the definition of "responsible families"?  Once again no guarantees! He has no plan behind this action...how many loans were given to homeowners that lied on their applications about their income?  Are these the same people that Obama plans on helping?  Lying on an application is irresponsible, yet many people did to qualify for their mortgages even "good" homeowners...

3.  On the Auto Industry:  As for our auto industry, everyone recognizes that years of bad decision-making and a global recession have pushed our automakers to the brink.  We should not, and will not, protect them from their own bad practices.  But we are committed to the goal of a re-tooled, re-imagined auto industry that can compete and win.  Millions of jobs depend on it.  Scores of communities depend on it.  And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.

Everyone already knows he's mistaken about the "nation that invented the automobile" but what actually pushed our automakers to the brink?  Poorly made vehicles!  Vehicles made without thought of the consumer at times!  Hell if the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado are the top selling vehicles than why don't they stick with making Trucks instead of a bunch of other junk!

4.  His claims of the Oil Imports are more today than ever before are false!  If you look at the facts found Imports peaked at 2005 levels and have been declining since!

5.  "We've already identified two trillion dollars in savings over the next decade."  Why don't you at least tell us the savings over the next 4 years or 8 years Mr. OBama?  Is that because you know that your $2 Trilliion can't really be saved?  Where is the actual "Identifications" of this savings at?  Can you show the American Citizens?

Sorry this is a quicky I've got a busy week!!!! More comments to come in the coming days and weeks!

From the Whitehouse Website:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Remarks-by-the-President-on-the-mortgage-crisis/

"In the end, all of us are paying a price for this home mortgage crisis. And all of us will pay an even steeper price if we allow this crisis to continue to deepen," President Obama said today in Phoenix, AZ. "But if we act boldly and swiftly to arrest this downward spiral, every American will benefit."

He laid out the four key elements of the Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan:

  1. refinancing help for four to five million homeowners who receive their mortgages through Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac
  2. new incentives for lenders to modify the terms of sub-prime loans at risk of default and foreclosure
  3. steps to keep mortgage rates low for millions of middle class families looking to secure new mortgages
  4. additional reforms designed to help families stay in their homes

"The plan I’m announcing focuses on rescuing families who have played by the rules and acted responsibly," the President said, "by refinancing loans for millions of families in traditional mortgages who are underwater or close to it; by modifying loans for families stuck in sub-prime mortgages they can’t afford as a result of skyrocketing interest rates or personal misfortune; and by taking broader steps to keep mortgage rates low so that families can secure loans with affordable monthly payments."

PROBLEMS WITH THE HOUSING PLAN:

Brad A. Blakeman states "The President’s Homeowner “Rescue” Plan is yet another socialist policy that rewards bad behavior and treads on the free market. Sure there are Americans who are legitimately in need and they should be helped, but, there are an awful lot that were as greedy and negligent in managing their finances as we have seen on Wall Street. So, I guess the plan is now that we will bail out Wall Street and Main Street, regardless of fault, incompetence or greed. It’s no longer a matter of personal or professional responsibility, it has become a matter of entitlement."

Steve Steckler states "Praising Obama and his fellow Democrats for the plan is like paying your kids to clean up their rooms. While it may be the best of bad alternatives, it reinforces the fact that the mortgage mess (as opposed to the Wall Street mess -- they overlap, but are not identical) is largely a Democratic one. The huge number of people who are "under water" on their mortgages -- the primary targets of the plan --is a direct result of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's willingness to buy almost any mortgage issued under almost any terms.

Despite warning signs as early as 2003, Barney Frank and his fellow Democrats (and a few Republicans feeding at the same campaign troughs) fiercely supported Fannie and Freddie as they over-leveraged themselves and recklessly facilitated easy-money mortgages for people who could not afford the homes they were buying. Now Obama is putting taxpayers on the hook to keep people in those unaffordable homes and backstop Fannie's and Freddie's lunacy (at a cost of between $66 billion and $400 billion) in a manner almost identical to the much- loathed October bank bailouts. However noble was the cause of expanding home ownership, it's useful to remember who the original sinners are here and who will bear the cost as Democrats struggle to clean up a mess of their own making."

Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, blasted the plan, saying it “appears to help those who least need it, and doesn’t help those that do.”

He objected most to the main theme of the foreclosure plan – using monetary incentives to spur lenders and borrowers to do the right thing.

“The biggest outrage is that the president’s plan actually will use taxpayer money to pay people to do what they are already supposed to do – pay their mortgage,” Shelby said. “It also uses taxpayer money to pay banks to do what they should already be doing – modifying mortgages.”

I FOR ONE AGREE that this plan is highly unneccesary!  It only benefits Americans who failed to do what they were supposed to do right!  Where is the benefit for all the Good Americans?  The ones who work hard and didn't jump into the same predicament?   I'm not saying some of the current homeowners don't work hard...I'm just saying with proper financial planning, with proper ability of a down payment, without cheating the system to get into homes they couldn't afford or loans that were going to spiral out of control...It's like gambling or investing you are always taking a risk, isn't that why they call your home your largest "investment" that a person makes?  All investments have risks!
